I love the image of this crowd of people watching on. Imagine the stunned faces, the confused looks and, more than likely, the fear that many are struck by. One thing is sure, though, no-one among them could doubt the conviction of what Zechariah is saying. I bet they were all listening intently, too.
In this culture, women’s worth was placed on their ability to have children. Elizabeth was old and unable to have children. She would have been looked down on by society until her long-awaited pregnancy. Elizabeth reversed social expectations as she welcomed her cousin Mary.

They speak of joy and peace and dispel fear in the somewhat shocked shepherds as they speak of the birth of Jesus.
An expression of joy, a heart of thankfulness and praising of the Lord can change an atmosphere and bring unity and peace and dispel fear.

The miracle of Jesus’ birth, and the exact thing that Isaiah is foretelling in Chapter 11, is what we celebrate at Christmas. As we return to our own roots, we gather together around trees and dining tables and television sets, sharing and loving on our friends and family members like no other time of year.
